Golden Age Literature Glossary Online
GALGO
A Sociolinguistic Visualization of Cultural Markers
¡Bienvenid@s a GALGO!
This digital platform offers readers of literary works from the 16th and 17th centuries an opportunity to unlock the meanings of select keywords and gain insight into the complex, idiosyncratic vocabulary of the Spanish Golden Age. GALGO is a searchable Spanish-English glossary that provides definitions and analysis of pivotal terms that reflect important linguistic and cultural concepts of the early modern period.
A Framework for Reading
An accessible analytical framework based on M.A.K. Halliday's social semiotic theory of language exposes each usage of a keyword as a reflection of the cultural environment, the social structure, and the linguistic system. GALGO's multilayered design allows users to trace the different definitions of a word within a work and across all works in the database.
Projects
Shakespeare (Demo): A Language in Motion
A demonstration corpus of seven plays spanning fifteen years of Shakespeare’s working life, from the comedies of the late 1590s to the collaborations of his final years. The guiding question is how meaning moves. A word like honest, nature or blood does not hold still across a career: it shifts with genre, with speaker, and with the decade. Reading these plays side by side — and following a single term from Julius Caesar through Hamlet to Macbeth — makes that movement visible in a way that reading one play cannot.Texts are the Folger Shakespeare editions, converted from TEI for use here. Composition dates follow the Oxford Shakespeare; where scholarship is genuinely unsettled, the range is shown rather than a false precision. The glossary in this project is a demonstration of what GALGO can represent — definitions, tenor, field and per-passage annotation. It is informed by standard glossarial scholarship but is not itself a scholarly edition, and should not be cited as one. The play texts are the Folger Shakespeare editions and are unaltered apart from conversion for display.
